Tooth Extractions

Some teeth need removal due to severe decay, fracture, advanced gum disease, crowding, impaction, or orthodontic planning. Dr. Vegulla will discuss alternatives and replacement options such as implants when appropriate.

The extraction visit

The tooth and surrounding tissues are numbed with local anesthetic. You will feel pressure during removal but should not feel sharp pain — tell us immediately if you do. Some teeth require sectioning into smaller pieces for safe removal.

After extraction

Bite on gauze until a clot forms; avoid rinsing hard, straws, smoking, or disturbing the site for the first day as directed. Use ice for swelling and medications as prescribed. Brush gently elsewhere after 24 hours. Call us for heavy bleeding, severe pain, or swelling that worsens.

More detailed post-op guidance is also available under Home Instructions on our patient information pages.
