There are many ways you can take an active role in your oral health. Having your teeth cleaned in our office every six months is an excellent place to start. Our hygienists and dentists identify plaque and problem areas before thoroughly cleaning your teeth and coaching you on home care.
Why consistent cleanings and checkups matter
Routine checkups are essential to good oral hygiene. Benefits of regular teeth cleanings include:
- Healthier bone and gums
- Teeth that last longer
- Earlier detection of oral cancer and other conditions
- A healthier, more confident smile
If cleanings are skipped
Neglecting oral hygiene can contribute to difficulty chewing and digesting food, persistent bad breath, worsening gum disease, and effects on overall wellness.
What to expect at your first checkup
Cleaning visits are often about an hour; new patient visits may run a bit longer. We review your health history, take digital X-rays when indicated, screen for oral lesions, examine your teeth for decay, evaluate your gums and periodontal pockets, remove plaque and tartar, and review brushing and flossing with you.
Preventing tooth decay
- Brush twice and floss once daily.
- Schedule dental cleanings and exams about every six months.
- Limit sugary and acidic snacks and drinks.
- Use fluoride products as recommended.
- Ask us about adjunctive tools if you are prone to decay.
The teeth cleaning procedure
Your hygienist removes soft plaque and hardened tartar from tooth surfaces, including along the gum line and between teeth. We often polish with a prophy paste to leave teeth smooth, then point out areas that may need extra attention at home.
Types of cleanings vs. periodontal therapy
Routine preventive cleaning (prophylaxis) is different from periodontal treatments such as full mouth debridement for heavy buildup, scaling and root planing for gum disease, or periodontal maintenance visits after gum therapy. We will recommend the right type of visit based on your exam.
Insurance and cost
Many plans include preventive benefits for exams and cleanings. We are happy to review your coverage and discuss any out-of-pocket costs before treatment.
